More than 500 foundation leaders attended the Philippines League of Corporate Foundations annual Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) Expo in Manila in July.  Highlighting the themes of collaboration and collective impact, the CSR Expo also focused on the progress being made on the United Nations 17 Sustainable Development Goals.

The League of Corporate Foundations invited the Tamarack Institute to share its insights weaving together the themes of collaborative leadership and collective impact through a plenary keynote and two workshops.  Corporate foundations in the Philippines are deeply engaged in funding and leading collaborative and community change efforts across the country.  Their commitment to investing in communities was evident through the presentations of plenary speakers who shared innovative projects including investing in local entrepreneurship to eradicate poverty, education, housing and technology.

Collective impact is still in the very early stages of both development and investment.  The CSR conference provided a platform to share with delegates how collective impact is a cross-sectoral approach which can tackle complex problems at scale.

An important theme of the CSR Expo was the UN Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) and the progress being achieved in the Philippines.  The SDGs were adopted by all nations in 2015 and are a shared global blueprint for countries and organizations to work collaboratively toward a sustainable, peaceful and prosperous future for all people and the planet.

Significant progress is being made in the Philippines on the SDGs as many of the goals are in parallel with the Philippine Development Plan.  Corporate foundation leaders were encouraged to continue their deep investments in communities and to continue to build the culture of collaboration across the country.

Participating in the League of Corporate Foundations CSR Expo provided insights into the global importance of the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals and how countries and corporations can play an important role in advancing these goals.  The CSR Expo also highlighted the critical importance of investing in collaboration, skills building and exchange across sectors and people.

League of Corporate Foundations Calls for Multi-stakeholder Collaboration

League of Corporate Foundations Calls for Multi-stakeholder Collaboration
2019 LCF CSR Expo highlights need for collective impact

If the recent report of the National Economic and Development Authority (NEDA) is any indication, then the poor regions in the Philippines seem to be getting poorer, with inequality in income becoming all the more apparent.

In fact, according to data from the Philippine Statistics Authority, the inequality in gross regional domestic product (GRDP) per capita, or the average income of people in a region, has widened from 2009 to 2018, which prompted NEDA to push for more reforms.

For the League of Corporate Foundations (LCF), collaboration is key. LCF is a network of ninety-three (93) of the largest operating and grant-making corporate foundations and corporations in the Philippines.

“Over the years, we, at LCF, have grown our network and resources to help uplift the lives of more Filipinos and we are making significant progress. But there’s still a lot of work to do. And we believe that continuing to work together and sustaining support of the private sectors to the nation building, we will make lasting change,” said LCF Chair Mario Deriquito.

With this, LCF is set to highlight in this year’s 2019 CSR Expo the need for collaboration among business, government, academe, public and civil society as a means to achieve collective impact.

Aptly themed Toward Collective Impact: Collaborations that Work!, the two-day 2019 CSR Expo—scheduled from July 4 to 5 at the Jose Rizal Hall of the Philippine International Convention Center (PICC) in Pasay City—aims to connect people to more opportunities to work together and sustain efforts in light of calls for inclusive development and collective impact in addressing Philippines’ pressing social issues, particularly poverty.

“We aim to share insights and best practices, to inspire more people by bringing them together for a common purpose, and to empower them by providing a platform for collaboration,” LCF Vice-Chair Cecile Alcantara added.

CSR Framework

The LCF CSR Expo brings together the Philippine business community and other sectors to discuss the latest trends, models and practices in CSR, and promote a common framework for action in support of sustainable national development.

This year’s CSR Expo includes global speakers Y. W. Junardy, expert team member of United Nations Global Compact (UNGC) and president of Indonesia Global Compact Network and Liz Weaver, co-CEO of Tamarack Learning Centre in Canada.

Joining them are Sec. Ernesto Pernia, NEDA; Gen. Benjamin Madrigal, Armed Forces of the Philippines (AFP) Chief of Staff; Ms. Chuchi Fonacier, Bangko Sentral ng Pilipinas (BSP) Deputy Governor; Ms. Marichu Tellano, National Commission on Culture & the Arts; and Ms. Mary Jane Ortega, Institute for Solidarity in Asia.

Since 2001, the LCF has annually held the LCF CSR Expo. It includes a conference and exhibition as its main attractions: the conference being a platform for CSR practitioners to discuss new ideas and trends, address issues and challenges, provide new knowledge and skills, and showcase CSR success stories.

The LCF CSR Expo presents an excellent opportunity to network with a highly targeted delegate base. In the previous years, about 500 delegates coming from diverse sectors attend the LCF CSR Expo, from the private sector, business community, civil society, the government and the academe.

It is held every first week of July, following former president Joseph Estrada’s Presidential Proclamation 299 that the first week of July shall be known as “CSR Week” and LCF shall lead the annual celebration.

The conference is open to all companies and individuals interested in the practice of strategic CSR, for a fee, which is inclusive of all meals and conference materials.
