Inspired by the community pantries, the Primary Group of Builders (PGB) launched two Soup Kitchen events in Liloan, Cebu last May 7 and Mandaue City last June 8, 2021. The heavy soup meals contained rice, meat, and vegetables and served some 550 community members. The Soup Kitchens alleviate hunger and malnutrition brought by loss of jobs and income.
PGB plans to replicate the soup kitchen in more communities where its affiliate businesses operate. The Soup Kitchen in Liloan was spearheaded by St. Phocas Organic Farms, accredited by the Department of Agriculture – Agricultural Training Institute to run an agri learning center. The Soup Kitchen was an opportunity to share agri-skills scholarship opportunities.
Meanwhile, the Soup Kitchen in Mandaue City was spearheaded by Maayo Well on the occasion of its fourth anniversary. On the same day, Maayo Well formally launched its hospital services.
Technical vocational skills training
PGBs corporate social responsibility responds to both immediate and long term needs of marginalized Filipinos. Aside from the soup kitchen, PGB provides relief and rehabilitation support to communities affected by disasters. More sustainably, PGB invests heavily in TVET to create shared value to families, communities, and industry.
In 2008, PGB established the Primary Structures Educational Foundation, Inc. (PSEFI) to formalize its commitment to help reduce poverty. PSEFI operates a technical vocational institute called the School of Knowledge for Industrial Labor, Leadership and Service (SKILLS).
SKILLS offers senior high school academic education accredited by the DepEd and technical vocational education and training (TVET) accredited by TESDA. SKILLS’ TVET offers construction, hospitality and tourism, and health services short courses.
In 2020, SKILLS piloted the Medical Auxiliary Services Specialist (MASS) course, a six-month classroom, laboratory, and workplace immersion program that fielded medical frontliners to Maayo Well’s operations in central and southern areas of Cebu. Maayo Well and SKILLS are currently organizing its fourth batch of MASS trainees. For more information, send an email addressed to the executive director at firstname.lastname@example.org.
