IGFI Response to Taal Volcano Eruption Victims
On January 12, 2020 at about 4:00 in the afternoon, the Taal Volcano has started to erupt and the people of the nearby towns have begun to evacuate. The partner municipality and city of the ICCP Group Foundation, Inc. (IGFI) in Batangas, i.e. Malvar and Sto. Tomas, have had accommodated evacuees from neighboring towns of Talisay, Agoncillo, Tanauan and Balete who needed immediate assistance.
Sto. Tomas City has 2,399 family-evacuees (9,550 individuals) in thirteen Evacuation Centers (ECs) while the Municipality of Malvar has 1,219 family-evacuees (4,876 individuals) in eleven ECs. Thus, as a response, IGFI conducted relief initiatives to the victims who were already in the ECs. An initial (1st batch) turnover and distribution of relief goods of non-food items i.e. sleeping mats, blankets and towels was done on January 19, 2020 as the expressed needs of the evacuees. Priority-beneficiaries of the relief items were the elderly, persons with disability and pregnant women or with babies.
On January 24, 2020, IGFI conducted its second wave of a relief operation to various evacuation centers in the same areas. But shall do next to the provision of assistance to other affected municipalities and will give out the same non-food items (sleeping mats, towels, blankets) which one of the most appropriate relief goods to provide according to the local government units (LGUs) with the donated items from Ang Hortaleza Foundation, Inc. (AHFI) and Transitional Diversified Group (TDG).
It was indeed a piece of welcome news that the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (Phivolcs) lowered the Alert Level to 3 (from 4) on January 26, 2020 which prompted the provincial government of Batangas to announce that residents of areas on lockdown have the choice to return to their homes. But this does not prevent IGFI from continuing its assistance since thousands are still in evacuation centers and also many are still with their relatives, friends, foster-families that need support as well since the priority of the LGUs are those in evacuation centers.#
