Globe beefs-up CSR programs to celebrate CSR month

Globe Telecom has intensified its corporate social responsibility (CSR) programs as the Philippines marked CSR month this past July. The company has been running its various CSR initiatives through its CSR arm, Globe Bridging Communities (Globe BridgeCom).

Globe BridgeCom has been focusing on five key areas including Education, Environment, Entrepreneurship, Community Involvement, and Volunteerism.

To kick off CSR Month, Globe employees engaged in a mangrove planting activity in Lian, Batangas. Around 600 mangrove seedlings were planted to repopulate the mangrove forest near Talim Bay, where the largest coral reefs, seagrass beds, and mangrove forests could be found.

Globe employee volunteers also recently trooped to the Gawad Kalinga Amalia Village in Concepcion, Tarlac to help plant assorted fruits and vegetables in the village’s Globe-GK BayanAnihan Farm. The Bayan-Anihan farm is one of 115 communal vegetable farms in Luzon organized by GK through its food sufficiency program, Bayan-Anihan. Backed by a multi-sectoral partnership led by GK and the Department of Agriculture (DA), Bayan-Anihan aims to eradicate hunger by empowering poor families to become self-reliant by producing their own food through backyard or organic farming.

The company has set to embark on the final stretch of the Globe Cordillera Challenge following the successful cross-country bike ride activity last April. Employees of Globe, together with other volunteers planted about 15,000 trees in a communal area in Kapangan, Benguet on July 31, as part of reforestation efforts for the Cordillera Mountains.

Globe has also been set to launch the Globe-SingTel Reading program last month. A tie-up between Globe and its principal partner Singapore Telecommunications Ltd, the program aims to improve the reading competencies and encourage love for reading of elementary students in remote areas of the country. Each student will receive several story books plus a bag filled with school supplies. The program is in line with the Department of Education’s Every Child is a Reader Campaign (ECARP).

Highlighting the celebration of CSR Month, Globe participated in the League of Corporate Foundations’ 9th CSR Expo which was held at the SMX Convention Center last July 14-15, 2010. The two-day CSR EXPO had a trade exhibit that showcased the various CSR initiatives of Globe, many of which have won recognition both here and abroad.

Just recently, Globe took home two awards from the prestigious Global Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) Awards held in Singapore. Globe won the Gold award for Best Work Place Practices category for its disaster response initiatives, and a Bronze award for Best Environmental Excellence for its Globe Goes Green program.
